I find that exciting, but also equally unsettling, a feeling I tend to supress. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 16.74px; font-weight: inherit; caret-color: transparent;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 16.74px; font-weight: inherit; caret-color: transparent;">Group behaviour is about how we act together and influence one another. Groupthink is more specific: it happens when the desire for agreement gets in the way of questioning assumptions and considering alternatives. Think of a meeting where everyone nods along, although several people privately have doubts. The apparent consensus may say more about what went unsaid than what everyone actually believed.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 16.74px; font-weight: inherit;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 16.74px; font-weight: inherit;">Now imagine everyone arriving at that meeting having consulted an AI assistant. Their arguments are polished and their recommendations reassuringly similar. If Artifical Intelligence can influence what we buy, believe or decide in the masses, there is an incentive to monetise that influence. There is also a risk that someone could exploit it, making carefully directed messages feel like independent advice.</p><p>Perhaps more diverse AI could help: systems designed to challenge assumptions, consider different perspectives and reach beyond the most familiar answer. Or perhaps each of us could have an assistant whose approach we can shape, with instructions to show its sources, acknowledge uncertainty and disagree when necessary. But personalisation has a catch. If I tune my assistant until it reflects all my preferences, have I taken back control, or simply built myself a more comfortable echo chamber?</p><blockquote><p>An assistant that always agrees with me might be excellent for my ego, but less useful for my judgement.</p></blockquote><p>For now, I would start with something simpler. Form a view before asking AI for one. Use it to test your thinking, not just tidy it up. In meetings, hear people’s ideas before circulating the machine’s summary, and leave room for the person who sees things differently.</p><p>Most importantly, keep talking to people whose experiences are not your own. I would rather AI helped us ask better questions than made us too comfortable with the answers.</p><p><em>Perhaps better AI will solve some of the problems AI creates. But the cure for something is not always more of the same. Before we appoint another chatbot to rescue us from the first one, we might try the slightly old-fashioned approach of thinking for ourselves. </em></p><p><em>And if your AI insists that all your ideas are brilliant, ask someone who knows you well. This blog post explains what back‑to‑school anxiety is, what it can look like, and how parents can support children through the transition.</h3><h2>What is back-to-school anxiety?</h2><p>Back-to-school anxiety is the brain's natural response to change. New teachers, classrooms, routines, and expectations can feel scary when you're young. Implementing these can help your child feel more confident and prepared.</p><p><strong>Remain calm</strong> - Children absorb any tensions around them. Staying calm helps prevent your own stress from fuelling theirs.</p><p><strong>Listen and validate</strong> - Let them talk without interruption. Acknowledge their feelings without dismissing or over‑analysing them. Also, avoid repeatedly reassuring your child that nothing bad will happen - frequent reassurance can inadvertently maintain anxiety rather than reduce it.</p><p><strong>Help their fears feel manageable</strong> - Gently remind them that it's normal to feel nervous when starting something new and settling in takes time.</p><p><strong>Create predictability</strong> - Uncertainty can drive anxiety. Morning routines, visual schedules, and clear expectations help reduce it.</p><p><strong>Familiarise the environment</strong> - A practice run of the journey or meeting a new teacher before the classroom is busy can reduce fear of the unknown.</p><p><strong>Strategise together</strong> - Talk through practical plans to build confidence in their ability to cope. Examples include:</p><ul><li>How to make new friends</li><li>What to do if they feel overwhelmed</li><li>How to handle homework or exam stress</li></ul><p><strong>Praise effort, not perfection</strong> - Compliment the moments they handle stress well to boost their self-esteem and resilience.</p><p><strong>Seek support when needed</strong> - Teachers, coaches, school nurses and counsellors can help children find their place in the school community. Instead, remind them that anxiety is temporary. On World Suicide Prevention Day, we want to help you understand what suicidal behaviour looks like, how to support someone who might be struggling, and what help is available.</h3><p>No matter what you or a loved one are going through, support is available, and you deserve it.</p><p>Suicidal thoughts are not signs of weakness or failure. They are signs of immense pain, often combined with feeling overwhelmed, trapped, or hopeless. Suicidal thoughts can range from fleeting distress to persistent, overwhelming urges. All deserve attention and support.</p><h2>What are signs that a person might be suicidal?</h2><p>People experiencing suicidal thoughts may show emotional, verbal, or behavioural signs. Openness, empathy, and timely support can save lives.</p><p>Recognise signs of distress - Trust your instincts. If something feels “off,” it’s okay to check in.</p><p>Listen without judgement - Let them speak freely. You don’t need to fix the problem. Just being present helps reduce shame and isolation.</p><p>Asking simple, direct questions - Asking, "Are you feeling suicidal?" does not make someone more likely to act on their thoughts. It shows you care and helps them to be honest about how they're feeling.</p><p>Encourage professional support - Help them contact a GP, mental health specialist, or crisis service. Some people use fewer words, speak in a different tone, or prefer written communication.</p><p><strong>Behaviours and interests</strong> - Repetitive actions, strong routines, or focused interests can help create a sense of calm and predictability.</p><p><strong>Sensory processing</strong> - Some people are highly sensitive to noise, touch, smells, tastes, or bright lights. No matter what your brain tells you, you deserve support. </p><p>Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Many people find the following approaches helpful:</p><ul><li>Talking therapies - such as counselling or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.<br></li><li>Peer support - talking about your worries can help you feel less alone.</li><li>Antidepressant medication - such as Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).</li></ul><p>While some people find antidepressant medication useful, what works best varies from person to person, and many benefit from psychological therapies alone.</p><h3>Lifestyle changes to manage depression</h3><p>Taking care of yourself through exercise, sleep, eating well, limiting alcohol, being creative, or spending time in nature can also lift your mood.&nbsp;</p><p>What helps is different for everyone.
